Readers across Snohomish and Island counties can get on the same page the entire month of May.
Libraries in both counties are sponsoring The Big Read, a chance for people to read, discuss and celebrate the same book.
This year’s selection is “The Things They Carried,” a masterwork of contemporary literature by Tim O’Brien about the Vietnam War.
The book is drawn from O’Brien’s own experiences, and the story follows infantrymen as they trudge through the jungles of Vietnam. As the title suggests, the author chronicles the things the soldiers carry along — literally and otherwise.
This is the second year area libraries offered The Big Read. Like last year, this year’s event includes plenty of activities that go beyond reading. Participants can attend film screenings, book discussions and Memorial Day tree plantings. There’s an opportunity for people to submit their own photos of the things they carry online.
The Mountlake Terrace library is offering an event where military families can chat with their loved one serving overseas via an online service.
