ABERDEEN — No injuries were reported after an explosion at the Imperium Grays Harbor Biodiesel Plant between Aberdeen and Hoquiam blew up a tank containing glycerin and damaged another containing sulfuric acid.
Company spokesman John Williams said the 1,500-gallon sulfuric acid tank is contained. He said glycerin is a byproduct of the biodiesel production and is not toxic.
The Daily World newspaper reported the 2:30 p.m. Wednesday blast rattled windows two miles away. A company official said the six employees in the plant at the time were not injured.
A large chunk of the glycerin tank was blown at least 100 feet away and crashed through a chain link fence.
Authorities evacuated surrounding buildings as a precaution.
Williams said that overpressurization caused the explosion, but that the company has not determined what caused the spike in pressure.
