Celebration marks 50th anniversary of parish
EVERETT — The parish communities of St. Mary Magdalen and St. John Mission will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of their parish. The Jubilee Mass is planned for 2:30 p.m. Dec. 2 with a reception to follow.
All former and current St. Mary Magdalen parishioners are welcome to attend.
The celebration will honor Catholic traditions, the diversity of the parishioners and renewal of Catholic faith. Archbishop Alex Brunett will also attend and celebrate Mass with the parish.
In November 1957, the St. Mary Magdalen Parish was established by decree by Archbishop Thomas Connolly. St. John Mission in Mukilteo, which was designated a mission in 1921, was served by the St. Mary Magdalen Parish.
Father William Lane served as the first pastor of the new parish from 1957 to 1969. The first Mass of the new parish took place in 1957. The new church and St. Mary Magdalen school were blessed on the first Sunday of Advent in 1960. St. Mary Magdalen School opened with six grades in 1960.
This jubilee for St. Mary Magdalen is also a bittersweet celebration. The Rev. Joseph Marquart will retire shortly after the new year. Marquart has been the pastor at St. Mary Magdalen for 23 years, longer than any other pastor. Marquart marked the 50th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood in May.
