WALLA WALLA — A store owner who killed an intruder does not support a community group that wants to rally Saturday on his behalf, police said.
Police Chief Scott Bieber and Walla Walla County Sheriff John Turner said they have been in contact with the lawyer for John Saul. They said attorney Mike Hubbard told them Saul believes a rally would hurt the healing process.
Surrounding property owners also oppose a demonstration, and trespassers could be arrested, police said Thursday.
His lawyer said Saul was defending himself and his property on May 4, when he shot 22-year-old Cesar Chavira in a break-in at the New York Store Western Outfitters where Saul also lives.
Chavira was a known gang member with a criminal record, the sheriff’s office said.
After the shooting, Chavira’s family and friends demonstrated outside the store, calling for Saul to be jailed. They plan another rally on Monday, KVEW reported.
Take Back Walla Walla, a community group, decided to rally Saturday, despite Saul’s opposition. It told supporters to stay on the sidewalk.
The group supports legislation in Washington that deadly force is justified in defense of a home, The Union-Bulletin reported.
