OLYMPIA — Health officials say water samples that showed high levels of fecal coliform bacteria prompted an emergency closure of normally pristine Ward Lake in Olympia.
Art Starry with Thurston County Environmental Health told KOMO-TV that the tests late last week showed bacteria levels 10 times the standard.
Residents report seeing evidence of raw sewage.
Art Coble is a former Olympia school superintendent who has lived on the lake for decades. He said you can’t swim in the lake right now and you shouldn’t walk in it.
Health inspectors are working to find the source of the pollution.
