FEDERAL WAY — The Federal Way school superintendent is warning parents about an Internet fad that has already gotten five middle school students expelled — using a popular body spray to light themselves on fire.
In a message posted on the district’s Web site and mailed to homes, Superintendent Tom Murphy warns against “a dangerous activity that is increasing in frequency among young people.”
District spokeswoman Deb Stenberg said the students expelled since Feb. 23 are sixth-grade boys who attended two middle schools. The most recent incident happened last Wednesday. Stenberg said no injuries or damage had been reported. She said four students had been readmitted after completing a fire education program. The fifth remains out of class.
Murphy said the fad involves boys using Axe Body Spray to light themselves or their clothing on fire. The alcohol-fueled flames are then quickly extinguished.
