SEATTLE — The Coast Guard has issued $2,500 fines to two Arizona men who jumped off the Spirit of Seattle cruise boat last month, prompting a quick rescue by the vessel’s crew.
The boat, operated by Argosy Cruises, had 300 passengers on board when the men jumped into the cold, heavily polluted East Duwamish Waterway, near the Port of Seattle, June 5. They were cited for interfering with the safe operations of a vessel.
Coast Guard Lt. Dana Warr says the men told police one of them was having a birthday, and they wanted to do something memorable.
Warr says they put not only their own lives at risk, but the lives of the crew and other passengers, as the Spirit of Seattle had to make a number of maneuvers to effect the rescue.
The men were identified as Nathan Keel, of Tempe, and Chanda Jatinder, of Mesa. Contact information for them could not immediately be found.
