CLEARVIEW — Snohomish County Public Works crews are preparing to put motorists on a straighter path next week, with a new intersection at 180th Street and 59th Avenue SE.
Roadwork ongoing since last year will do away with an awkward traffic spot where roads met at a skewed angle. County workerson March 18 are scheduled to close West Interurban Boulevard, and open the new 59th Avenue Southeast intersection several hundred feet to the west.
The new intersection helps drivers more easily recognize where to turn on or off 180th Street and improves sight distance. Drivers will notice new left- and right-turn pockets at both the Interurban Boulevard and 59th Avenue Southeast intersections. The old West Interurban Boulevard intersection will become a cul-de-sac, and drivers will use the new extension of 59th Avenue to access that section of the road.
The local community began working with the Public Works department in 2009 to identify possible solutions for traffic problems in the area.
Construction began in late 2012, and was partially funded by a $500,000 federal grant targeted toward improving rural town centers and corridors. Construction is expected to continue this spring.
