Former gubernatorial candidate visits Archbishop Murphy

Former state senator and two-time gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi paid a visit to the Archbishop Murphy High School’s senior Advanced Placement government and politics class Nov. 19. Rossi came at the request of teacher Roger Brodniak and Shawn Hoban, Rossi’s business partner at Coast Equity Partners.

The students were treated to a full period of discussion and questions about politics, campaigns and legislative budget writing. Rossi discussed his role in 2003 balancing the then-$23 million state budget as chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

At the end of class, Rossi presented copies of his book, “Dino Rossi: Lessons in Leadership, Business, Politics and Life,” to all of the students. In return, the class presented Rossi with a new Archbishop Murphy High School sweatshirt.

Entire Shoreline CC faculty gets layoff notice

Shoreline Community College has notified union representatives that all faculty jobs at the school could be at risk.

Known as a Reduction in Force (RIF) notice, the college has never before put every faculty member on notice.

“We’ve faced cuts before, but we’ve never faced anything like what appears to be coming,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs John Backes, referring to pending state budget cuts. The notice was sent by Backes to college and faculty union officials Nov. 17.

“This is an extremely serious situation,” Backes said in a press release. “This is going to hurt us in ways we can’t even imagine. We’re going to chop into healthy programs.”

The notices do not necessarily mean staff would lose their jobs but are a legal requirement to alert them to the possibility.
