LAKE STEVENS — The community gathered by the lake Tuesday night to remember Cindy Tate.
Tate, 48, died when her ski boat sank in Lake Stevens on Saturday night.
As the day was winding down, dozens of people came together at Wyatt Park to honor Tate. Family and friends wrote messages on sand-filled paper bags, then put candles in them.
A 10-foot barge with Tate’s photo in the middle carried candles to the place where her boat went down.
Christoph Calkins watched among Tate’s loved ones.
“It was a very touching experience,” he said. “It’s amazing how the community came together.”
Calkins, 23, of Mountlake Terrace, worked with Tate. He came on Tuesday to honor her memory.
“Everybody knew and loved Cindy, and she knew and loved everybody else,” Calkins said.
Officials believe a wave broke over the bow of the 20-foot boat and flooded it. Nine people made it safely to shore. Tate likely got trapped behind the helm. Divers found her body Sunday afternoon in 50 feet of water.
Snohomish County sheriff’s crews on Wednesday pulled the boat from the bottom of the lake, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
