Try rowing for free

Lake Stevens Rowing Club hosts a free, four-day Winter Crew Camp for those interested in trying rowing, 9:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 26-29. Get an introduction to rowing, try an ergometer machine, learn proper rowing technique and get on-the-water experience.

Try snowshoeing for cheap

The Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and Discover Your Northwest again offer the Snowshoe with a Ranger Program. Snowshoes are provided, but participants should bring water, lunch and snacks.

Stevens Pass: 11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Jan. 6 to March 25. Learn about plants, wildlife, local history and snow safety on a 90- to 120-minute guided tour along the Pacific Crest Trail. Reservations required. Suggested donation is $15, $10 youth. Call 360-677-2414.

Darrington Ranger District: 8:30 a.m. Dec. 27-28, Jan. 27-28 and Feb. 3. Follow the route of the former Everett and Monte Cristo railway, pausing for history and ecology talks along the way. The halfway point is Big Four Mountain’s Big 4 Inn. This 5-hour tour is for ages 16 and older. Reservations required. Suggested donation is $20. Call 360-436-1155.

The program also is held at Snoqualmie Pass.
