Author to speak
Author Luis Jaramillo is set to speak to the Lake Stevens Historical Society at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lake Stevens School District’s Administration Building, 12309 22nd St NE. Jaramillo is the grandson of Dr. Robert Hagen who practiced medicine in Lake Stevens and Everett for many years. His book, “The Doctor’s Wife” is 91 short vignettes retelling the story of the Hagen family. Jaramillo has been recognized for his work by NPR, Oprah Book of the Week and the Dzanc Prize for Best Short Story Collection 2012.
Plastic awareness: Cafe Zippy invites the community to help create a chandelier out of 500 recycled bottles, 7 p.m. Tuesday. The event aims to raise awareness about the environmental costs of plastic water bottles. Bring clear, clean plastic bottles and scissors, if possible.

Reading event: The summer reading kickoff at the Mountlake Terrace Library is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday with a program from the Pacific Science Center. Kids will learn about earthquakes, volcanoes, rocks and fossils and get a glimpse of the underground geological forces at play throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Mountlake Terrace library is at 23300 58th Ave., W, Mountlake Terrace. The free program for children 5 and up is funded by the Friends of the Mountlake Terrace Library.
