Front Porch: Mukilteo tank farm site cleared for development

Tank farm site

The 20-acre former tank farm on the Mukilteo waterfront has officially been transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the Port of Everett, clearing the way for redevelopment of the site, according to U.S. Sen. Patty Murray.

The long-awaited transfer was announced by Murray’s office on Tuesday. The site is the state ferry system’s preferred location for a new $130 million ferry dock. Environmental studies are under way on the plan. Construction could begin as early as 2015 and finish by 2019.

The tank farm served as a fuel storage and distribution terminal until 1990. A small portion of the land, 1.1 acres, will be transferred to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce for use by the National Marine Fisheries Service, according to Murray’s announcement. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research facility is on the site.

Hepatitis warning: An outbreak linked to “Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend” frozen berries has caused 30 cases of hepatitis A in five states. There have been no reported illnesses in Washington linked to these berries, but they were sold in Costco stores throughout the state. The Washington State Department of Health advises against eating these berries; discard any remaining product from your freezers. Even if some of the product has been eaten without anyone in your home becoming ill, the rest of the product should be discarded.

Contact your health care provider right away if you have eaten these berries and develop yellow eyes or skin, abdominal pain, diarrhea, pale stools or dark urine. Symptoms can start up to seven weeks from the time of exposure. For more information, check the Department of Health website www.doh.wa.gov.
