Skykomish Old Timers picnic
The Skykomish Old Timers picnic is set for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. July 18 at the ballpark at Highway 2 and City Ball Park Drive in Skykomish.
There will be class reunions for 1955, ’65, ’75, ’85, ’95 and ’05, as well as a recognition of the 1965 basketball team. Food will be sold. Camping is permitted for those attending the picnic. There will be a raffle, kids games and other events.
The Old Timers Picnic grew from the lapse of a much larger 1960s-era celebration, Tunnel Days, which commemorated the building of the Great Northern Railroad tunnel through the Cascade Mountains. When the town decided not to continue Tunnel Days, a group of folks made sure the picnic continued, keeping a way for the community and its far-flung former residents to get together each year.
No road measure for city: The Lynnwood Transportation Benefit District has decided not to seek a ballot measure this fall related to road improvements.
A measure to increase the sales tax to earn revenue for road projects was rejected by voters in 2014. With regional transit agencies mulling sales tax measures, there were concerns of Lynnwood’s sales tax jumping more than 10 percent, officials said recently. The district leaders made the decision last week. The next meeting is scheduled for October.
