The Trolley Days Band is starting its eighth season with a rehearsal at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Edmonds Church of God, 8224 220th St. SW.

New members are always welcome to join. There are no auditions or dues for the all-volunteer group.

In this cold spell, there are ways to conserve heat according to the Snohomish County PUD.

Here are some ideas:

Close your drapes at night and open them during the day to let the sun help warm your home.

Check heating ducts to ensure they’re properly sealed and insulated. This can cut up to 25 percent off your heating bill.

Lower heating costs and improve air quality by cleaning or changing furnace air filters every two months during the heating season.

Caulk and weatherstrip windows and doors.

Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower when you’re home. For every three degrees you lower it from your normal setting, you save 10 percent on heating. Lower it to 55 degrees when you go to bed or when you’re not at home.

Keep the fireplace damper closed when it’s not in use.

Use compact fluorescent light bulbs, which use one-fourth the energy of an incandescent bulb.

When buying appliances, look at the yellow Energy Guide label and buy only energy-efficient appliances.

Set your water heater no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

If your water heater was purchased before 1992, wrap it with an insulated blanket.

Use cold-water rinse in the clothes washer.

Meet artist Ole Oleson at the opening of his one man show from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Marco Polo Gallery, 201 Lincoln Ave. in Old Town Mukilteo. Oleson’s current work in oils and wood is inspired by northwest scenery.

His works have been shown at the Guggenheim in New York and the Museums of Modern Art in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, and San Francisco.
