‘Deadliest Catch’ skipper at fair
Crab boat captain Greg Moncrief, featured on the Discovery Channel’s documentary-style reality TV series “Deadliest Catch,” will get wet today at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe. The skipper of the Farwest Leader crab vessel, Moncrief will be a dunk-tank participant from 4 to 6 p.m. today at a traffic-safety booth, said Tracy McMillan, coordinator of the Snohomish County DUI Task Force. The booth is near the fair’s food court.
88,021 pounds and counting
When Everett Food Bank officials sent out an SOS earlier this month for help in filling nearly empty shelves, the public responded.
A total of 88,021 pounds of food and $66,709 have been donated. Contributions came from 680 people and organizations.
A semi-truck filled with more than 19,000 pounds of food came from Stock Pot, a locally based soup maker. Food bank officials say a woman’s paraplegic son donated his $500 monthly income check because those visiting the food bank needed it more than he did.
The food bank, run by Volunteers of America, serves 2,700 households.
Red Cross aids storm victims
The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross has sent eight volunteers to Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota and Illinois to help people affected by recent severe storms and flooding.
Judy Pearson of Everett and Andi Anzelmo of Mukilteo are in Minnesota.
Bob Leighton of Edmonds, Hunter MacKay of Bothell and Jack Robinson of Everett are serving in Ohio. Bill Westlake of Mountlake Terrace is in Illinois.
Karen French of Marysville and Bill Thayer of Everett are being sent to North Dakota.
They’re among 1,600 Red Cross volunteers from across the country responding to the emergency.
Correction
A story and headline about an Everett man being sentenced to more than four years in prison in connection with an accident that killed a friend was wrong in saying the man had pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while driving while drunk. Kelly C. Nickell, 29, Everett, was sentenced after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide and running away from a crash. Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred June 6 on N. Machias Road. The story appeared on Page B2 on Thursday.
