Red Cross wants you to nominate a hero

Know someone who has shown courage, kindness and selflessness in helping others?

The American Red Cross is looking for everyday heroes from Snohomish County.

Honorees will be recognized at the Snohomish County Chapter’s 12th annual Real Heroes Breakfast on Dec. 6 at Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center.

Extraordinary deeds must have been performed between Oct. 1, 2006, and Oct. 5, 2007.

Nominees must live in Snohomish County or be assigned to a ship or military facility in the county.

Nomination forms are available at www.snohomishcounty.redcross.org or by calling Kay Ashenfelter at 425-740-2324. Nomination deadline is Oct. 5.

Ceremony to honor Civil War veterans

Musket and cannon salutes and historic exhibits are planned Sept. 15 in honor of Civil War veterans who migrated to Snohomish County.

The free event is scheduled from noon to 3:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett. See Civil War weaponry, uniforms and artifacts.

At 1 p.m., Everett historian David Dilgard plans a tour of the graves of interesting people buried at the cemetery.

The musket and cannon salutes are part of a 3 p.m. ceremony called “Echoes Blue and Gray” at 41st Street SE and Broadway.

Short speeches are planned by the Sons of the Union, Confederacy and other groups.

Disaster training classes begin soon

Fire District 1 is offering Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, training for people interested in learning how to help their community during a major disaster.

Classes will meet twice a week beginning Sept. 17.

CERT classes teach citizens about readiness, basic disaster first aid, search and rescue operations, how to put out small fires and the psychological effect of disasters.

Classes are free, but some emergency materials might need to be purchased.

Charity race on Whidbey Island

The Major McClung Memorial Run is planned for Sept. 15 at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

The event is open to the public and runners can enter the 5K or 10K runs. Walkers also are welcome. Cost is $25. Proceeds will go to the Wounded Marines Program.
