This weekend, amateur radio operators plan to participate in an event called Field Day. Sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, a national association of amateur radio operators, the event gives operators a chance to practice their emergency communication skills and show folks what the radio service is about.
During Hurricane Katrina, amateur radio was the only way some people could communicate.
Saturday, operators from around the world plan to go into the field and set up communication stations using portable antennas and generators or batteries to simulate emergency operating conditions.
The objective is to make as many contacts as possible with other participating stations in a 24-hour period.
The Machias Radio Group will set up at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Snohomish County Lord Hill Quarry Site, 13823 Old Tester Road, Snohomish.
