Novelist Gary Krist is scheduled to discuss and sign his new book, “The White Cascade: The Great Northern Railway Disaster and America’s Deadliest Avalanche,” at 2 this afternoon at the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave.

His book details the avalanche in March 1910 that hit two Great Northern Railway trains near the west end of the old Cascade Tunnel under Stevens Pass, killing 96 people.

The program also will include the announcement of a new library fund that honors retiring library director Mark Nesse. The Northwest Room Local History Publishing Fund is being established thanks to a $1,000 donation from Jeanne and the late Harry Metzger.

The Snohomish County DUI-Traffic Safety Task Force is accepting nominations for its annual awards ceremony, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 20 at the Everett PUD Auditorium.

All nomination forms must be returned by March 12.

The city of Snohomish has posted development plans for a proposed shopping center on Bickford Avenue on its Web site, www.ci.snohomish. wa.us.

The development, called Snohomish Station, is expected to include 450,000 square feet of retail space. Home Depot plans to have a store there.

The Monroe Garden Club is asking for donations of healthy plants for its annual plant sale in May.

Spring is the time many perennial plants benefit from dividing. Garden club volunteers will dig up or pick up your plants, or you may deliver them to the Monroe Post Office, 122 N. Blakely St. Label the plants for proper identification.
