Darrington church marks 100 years
A celebration is planned Sunday at Darrington United Methodist Church, 765 Emens Ave., Darrington.
It’s a party for the 100th anniversary of the church. Services will take place at 2:30 p.m., followed by an open house until 5:30 p.m.
The church received a certificate from Secretary of State Sam Reed honoring its March 7, 1907, incorporation. Reed said representatives from the church arrived in Olympia on horseback. Since the denomination was known for its “circuit riders” in the past, the church appreciated that information, Pastor Sandi McCaulley said.
Happy birthday to the Boy Scouts
The Boy Scouts of America celebrated 97 years of service during Scouting Anniversary Week, which ends today.
The organization was founded in Great Britain in 1907 by British military hero Lord Robert Baden-Powell. Two years later, William D. Boyce, a Chicago publisher traveling in London, became lost in fog. A young boy helped him find his way. When Boyce thanked the boy for his aid and offered him a tip, the boy explained that it was his duty as a Scout to help others and declined the tip.
Impressed with the boy’s actions, Boyce met with Baden-Powell and laid the groundwork to bring Scouting to the United States. The Boy Scouts of America was established on Feb. 8, 1910.
