Help for families to pay for college

Although college can quickly get expensive, only one-quarter of Washington’s high school seniors last year filled out the federal college loan applications needed to obtain financial aid.

In an effort to increase the use of financial aid, Northwest Education Loan offers its College Goal Sunday event at 2 p.m. Sunday at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St., Everett.

School advisers and loan officers will be available to help families understand and complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA. Students and parents should bring recent tax forms or pay stubs, the student’s Social Security number and driver’s license.

Everett schools set make-up days

The Everett School Board has set make-up dates for five of six school days lost this season to wind, snow and ice.

They are:

  • Monday, previously a teacher work day.

  • Feb. 16, previously the first day of mid- winter break.

  • March 9, previously a teacher work day.

  • June 8, previously a teacher work day.

  • June 22, previously a teacher work day and now the new last day of the school year for students. It will be a half-day.

The district plans to apply for a state waiver for one day lost during the windstorms, when Gov. Chris Gregoire declared a state of emergency in Snohomish County.

If school is canceled again this winter, Feb. 20 would also be named a make-up day. Any other cancellations would be made up at the end of the school year.
