When you set your clocks back on hour on Sunday for daylight-saving time, remember to check your smoke detectors and change their batteries.

Firefighters say changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce deaths and injuries from fires and smoke. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire almost in half.

Carve a pumpkin under the waves

The annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest is scheduled for noon today in the dive park at Brackett’s Landing North.

The only rule is that the pumpkins must be carved underwater. The youngest kids on the beach at the time will judge the jack-o’-lanterns in two categories: scariest and funniest.

The winners will receive prizes donated by Edmonds Underwater Sports. The pumpkins are being donated by QFC.

Proceeds from a $10 entry fee will go toward maintaining the Edmonds Underwater Dive Park. Call Ralph Sweet at 206-265-9300.

Concert to aid senior centers

The Snohomish and Monroe Rotary clubs plan to sponsor a benefit concert from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Snohomish High School Performing Arts Center, 1316 Fifth St. The Langley Ukulele Ensemble is scheduled to play.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help the Snohomish and East County senior centers. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors or students. The clubs offer a 10 percent discount for groups of 20 or more. Call 360-568-5629.

Elks plan to honor veterans tonight

Everett Elks Lodge No. 479 will be honoring veterans at a dinner and program beginning at 5 tonight at 2731 Rucker Ave. in Everett.

Merinda Mullens of Blue Star Mothers of America, a group whose members have children in the military and provide support to the troops, will be a guest speaker.

Dinner is $10. For a reservation, call 425-252-4179.
