Parents request mediation help

Dispute Resolution Center of Snohomish and Island Counties, a program of Volunteers of America, is planning to offer its annual holiday mediation sessions for parents who are having difficulty determining where their children will spend school holiday vacations, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Hanukkah.

The service is offered free and with little advance notice. For more information, call 425-339-1335 before Tuesday.

Be careful using a gas generator

Briggs &Stratton Corp. offers tips for using a generator for those suffering through power outages:

  • Do not run a generator in an enclosed area.

  • Use a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector when running your generator.

  • Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable. Allow the engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling.

  • Always use fresh gas.

  • Follow maintenance guidelines.

  • Do not operate the generator near combustible materials.

  • When using extension cords, be sure they are grounded and rated for the application.

  • Coiled cords can get hot. Always uncoil cords and lay them in flat, open locations.

  • If you are connecting a generator into your home electrical system, have a qualified electrician install a power transfer switch. Never plug your generator directly into your home outlet.

  • Protect your generator from exposure to rain and snow. Generators produce powerful voltage. Do not operate under wet conditions.

    Holiday skating show in Everett

    The Everett Figure Skating Club and Comcast Community Ice Rink plans to offer their third annual Holiday Ice Show from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Everett Events Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett.

    It’s free with a food bank donation or goods or cash to benefit Volunteers of America.
