Prison dog unit to stay in Monroe
The state Department of Corrections is reducing its police dog units in Washington prisons from eight teams to two.
It’s all about saving money.
“The decision to reduce this program was not easy to make,” said Dick Morgan, prisons division director. “We appreciate the collaboration with the K-9 handlers and the Teamsters union who presented this modified program reduction and worked with us to make it happen.”
One team will be based at Monroe Correctional Complex in Snohomish County and the other at Airway Heights Corrections Center near Spokane.
The ability to continue this program beyond July 1 will depend on the availability of funds.
Officers who work with the dogs will move to other positions within the agency and will be able to adopt their retired dogs.
