Washington State Ferries will launch its summer service Sunday.

There will be one more vessel on the San Juan Islands routes and some extended hours to accommodate tourists on the islands.

Other changes:

* Two daily trips from Anacortes to Sidney, B.C.

* Extended hours on the Mukilteo-Clinton route on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

* Extra weekend service on Saturday and Sunday on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route.

Victor Balta will share some laughs

Herald pop culture and TV writer Victor Balta will exchange snappy banter with longtime Seattle TV and radio personality Pat Cashman about 2 p.m. today on Cashman’s new show on Everett’s KRKO 1380 AM.

“The Pat Cashman Show” runs from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Victor will try to match wits with the funnyman during a 15-minute segment, which promises to become a regular weekly exchange.

Record nursing class to graduate

Everett Community College nursing students will make history Friday with the largest single graduating class of nurses since the program began in 1950.

EvCC expects to award registered nursing degrees to 34 students, said Patricia Black, dean of nursing and health sciences.

The class is the first to come through under a partnership with Providence Everett Medical Center in 2004. The hospital is sponsoring 30 nursing slots per year at EvCC until 2008. The hospital’s commitment amounts to $540,000 over four years.

Take the bus on Thursday

In response to rising gas prices, the Community Transit Board of Directors has passed a resolution recognizing “National Dump the Pump Day” on Thursday to encourage bus ridership.

Community Transit will join other public transportation systems in the country to raise awareness about alternatives to driving.

Cat shelter’s garage sale set

Visit the Purrfect Pals cat shelter, 230 McRae Road NE in Arlington, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for its annual garage sale.

The money will go toward care for cats at the shelter. Visitors also will be able to tour the shelter.
