Wellington Elementary is a Blue Ribbon School

Wellington Elementary School was named a 2006 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for its high WASL scores.

The Woodinville school, which draws students from the Maltby area, performed in the state’s top 10 percent on the 2005 Washington Assessment of Student Learning.

This year, for example, 96 percent of fourth-graders passed the reading test.

“It’s really nice to be recognized for the work that goes on in our schools all the time. To be singled out feels really special,” Principal Lew Dickert said.

Students and staff celebrated last week with an assembly. The school bought enough blue ribbons for each of its 565 students to wear.

Seven Washington schools and 250 nationwide were honored this year.

Local art teachers among state’s best

Two local teachers are among those being honored with the Washington Art Education Association’s annual awards.

Cathy Tanasse of Snohomish High School was named the secondary art educator of the year.

Audrey Sharp at Mariner High School in south Everett was named the outstanding young art educator of the year.

The awards recognize outstanding professionalism, service, promotion and support of the arts by art teachers. Recipients are eligible to be nominated for regional and national awards.

The women were recognized at the WAEA fall conference held Friday and Saturday in Sammamish.
