KENNEWICK — A former Grandview man who has been serving a life sentence for a murder he committed at age 15 has been resentenced to a minimum of 25 years.
33-year-old Jose Angel Munguia has been in jail since the 1997 shooting.
The Tri-City Herald reports he was resentenced after the U.S. Supreme Court in 2012 threw out all mandatory life sentences without possibility of parole for juveniles because they amounted to cruel and unusual punishment.
On Friday, Benton County Superior Court Judge Vic VanderSchoor ordered Munguia to serve the mandatory 25 years with a maximum term of life. A state review board will decide if he is ready to get out of prison.
About 30 cases statewide were affected by the 2012 decision.
