Seattle Tilth has published a stellar 2009 schedule of classes, including cool stuff for kids, beginners and veterans with an emphasis on growing food, composting and even working with backyard hens and goats.

Check out the nonprofit gardening organization’s full class descriptions here or call 206-633-0451. Prices listed here are for people who aren’t members of Seattle Tilth. Registration and payment is required in advance of most classes.

Seed Starting Intensive: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 7 and 8; $105.

Get Ready to Garden: 10 a.m. to noon March 14; $35.

Grow More in a Small Space: 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 25 and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 28; $95.

Container Veggie Gardening: 7 to 9 p.m. April 16 or 10 a.m. to noon June 13; $35. There will be an abbreviated version of the class from 10 to 11 a.m. May 2 and from 11 a.m. to noon May 3 during the plant sale for $18.

Biointensive Gardening, Grow the Most in a Small Space: 10 a.m. to noon April 19; $35.

Seattle Tilth Edible Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 2 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3; free.

Vertical Gardening: 2 to 4 p.m. May 17; $35.

1, 2, 3 Grow a Garden: noon to 1 p.m. May 2 and May 3 during the plant sale; $18.

Growing Heat Crops: 10 a.m. to noon June 27; $35.

Starting With Baby Chicks: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 21, April 11 or May 16; $40.

City Chickens 101: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 7, April 25 or May 30; $40.

City Chickens 201: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 20; $40.

City Chickens Coop Tour: noon to 4 p.m. July 11; $35.

City Goats 101: 1:30 to 4 p.m. May 16; $40.

Choosing the Right Home Composting System for You: 10 a.m. to noon April 4; $35.

Composting for Apartment Dwellers: 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 11; $35.

Comprehensive Organic Gardener Program: Feb. 26-March 19; 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays or Sundays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; $275.

Master Composter/Soil Builder Program: Applications for this one-year program are due Feb. 25; $150 refundable deposit.

Earth Steward Garden Tours in the Children’s Garden: Tours run Tuesday and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 10 through June 5; $4.75 per child with an $80 minimum. Call soon to reserve a tour date.

Monday Mornings at the Children’s Garden: 10 to 11:30 a.m. April 13 through June 8; $30.

Seattle Tilth’s Harvest Fair 2009: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12; free.
