If you poke your head into barn No. 608 at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, you will witness the culmination of a full year’s worth of 4-H work. You might even find Haley Baker, 14, of Snohomish, surrounded by her five award-winning pygmy goats.
Hanging on a display board behind her are 13 ribbons won by the goats, plus a first place championship ribbon awarded to Haley for her showmanship.
While the fair represents a lot of work, Haley says it is what all her 4-H work finally comes down to.
Haley has been caring for her goats and competing at the fair for 7 years. The goats are not for milk or meat, she says. “They’re my pets. I love animals and would like to have a career with animals.”
Somehow, the visitor knows that Haley Baker will have whatever career she chooses.
