OKANOGAN — A homeless man who welcomed arrest in June changed his mind this week and escaped from an Okanogan County Corrections Center work crew at the county fairgrounds.
Sheriff Frank Rogers told The Wenatchee World that 18-year-old Nathaniel D. Smallbeck left his black-and-white striped shirt behind Tuesday and fled through heavy brush. The sheriff said Thursday that deputies are still looking for him.
When he was caught two months ago during a break-in at a home in Orondo, Smallbeck told the deputy he wanted to be arrested because he had nowhere to go.
Rogers said the escape will likely make the jail Smallbeck’s home for several additional months after he’s found, and he won’t qualify for any more work crews.
