How you can help Katrina’s victims

Here’s how you can help those affected by Hurricane Katrina:

Rock-n-roll benefit: Local rock groups Classified and The Rocket Band will perform at a benefit concert 5-8 p.m. Friday in the band shell at Downtown Cove Park in Lake Stevens. Food and drinks will be available from Ixtapa, Speedy’s Pizza and B.C. MacDonald’s. All proceeds go to American Red Cross hurricane relief. For more information, call Mike at 425-335-5174.

Reconstruction items needed: Blake Sekulich of Snohomish and a firefighter friend in Mississippi will move debris, fix homes and cut trees in the disaster area. Sekulich is looking for donations of rakes, shovels, brooms, chain saws, ladders and bottled food and water for the Mississippi cleanup effort. He plans to leave Snohomish on Friday. Coffee proceeds: Broadway Coffee, 8300 Beverly Blvd., Everett, will donate all tips and 30 percent of its profits to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund today. For more information, call 425-348-6446.

Barbecues in the park: A free barbecue with kids’ games, fishing and face painting will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday in Everett’s Forest Park to raise donations for Hurricane Katrina victims. Half of the donations will go to the Red Cross, a quarter to missing children’s funds and a quarter to two displaced families. Family center: The Lake Stevens Family Center is collecting clothes, toiletries and other necessities through Tuesday for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Items may be dropped off at the Family Center, 1803 123rd Ave. NE, Lake Stevens. For more information, call the Family Center 425-397-7433 or Vincent McGruder at 425-335-4664.

Southern-style fish fry: Merrill Gardens Retirement and Assisted Living in Marysville will have a Southern-style fish feed 4-6 p.m. Thursday to raise money for the Red Cross relief effort. A $10 donation is requested. For more information, call 360-659-1279.

Corn maze: Employees at Bob’s Corn Maze in Snohomish will volunteer their time Saturday so all proceeds collected for admission can be donated to the Red Cross for the Katrina relief fund. Bob’s Corn Maze is at 10917 Elliott Road. For more information, call 866-bobscorn or e-mail bobscorn@hotmail.com.

Bake sale: The Monroe High School volleyball team will have a bake sale 8:30 a.m. -1 p.m. Saturday in the foyer of the high school gym. All donations will be sent to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief.

Garage sale: Employees of Snohomish Top Foods will have a benefit garage sale 9 a.m. -6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the store, 1301 Ave. D. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.

Roadhouse event: One-Eyed Jack’s Roadhouse, 14019 Highway 99, will hold a fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina 6 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Saturday. Five percent of all beverage sales will go to the Red Cross. The event will include a hypnosis show and blind auctions of T-shirts, gift certificates and other items. Bartender tips and proceeds from a voluntary $5 cover charge after 9 p.m. will go to the Red Cross. Donations of nonperishable food will go to local food banks. Candlelight devotional: The Baha’i Faith Community Center of Everett plans a candlelight devotional for Hurricane Katrina victims at 7 p.m. Friday at the center, 2913 W. Marine View Drive. The event is open to the people of all faiths. For more information, call 425-438-0202 or 425-303-3314.

Church fund: Episcopal Relief and Development is accepting donations for Hurricane Katrina victims. For more information, call 800-334-7626 or go to www.er-d.org.

Spa clinics: Ashmead College in Everett will host two spa clinics to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina on Sunday and Sept. 25. Third- and fourth-term students will administer spa treatments for $40 in cash or school supplies. To schedule an appointment, call 425-388-0294. Ashmead College is at 3019 Colby Ave.

Psychic fair: The Church of Divine Man of Everett will donate the proceeds from its psychic fair on Saturday to the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event will be 1-5 p.m. at the church, 2402 Summit Ave. Admission is free. There will be a charge for readings and workshops. For more information, call 425-258-1449 or e-mail cdm@c-d-m.org.

High school concert: Stanwood High School will have a concert at 8 p.m. Sept. 23 to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. The school choirs, drama program and bands will participate. Tickets will be available for $1, $5 and $10. There is no limit on how many can be purchased.

Collecting items: Dan Duplantier of Mukilteo will depart Sept. 23 for Baton Rouge, La., with donations for Hurricane Katrina victims. Clothing, bedding supplies, nonperishable food items and first-aid supplies are sought. Items may be dropped off at 9132 50th Place W., Mukilteo. October concert: Bands will play from noon Oct. 15 to 1:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Jet Deck Bar and Grill, 10203 31st Ave. W., Everett, near Paine Field. Proceeds from a suggested $10 donation will go to the American Red Cross relief fund. Food and clothing will also be accepted. For more information, call 425-353-0770.
