The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office will search the Mount Pilchuck area today for human remains reportedly found by hikers Tuesday afternoon.
Two 19-year-old men reported finding the remains about 1:48 p.m., but they couldn’t describe exactly where, sheriff’s office spokesman Rich Niebusch said.
Thick fog kept investigators from finding anything Tuesday afternoon when they searched the area by helicopter. Search-and-rescue teams will hike into the area today.
Niebusch said it’s too early to tell whether the alleged remains might be connected with the July shooting deaths of Mary Cooper and Susanna Stodden on the nearby Pinnacle Lake Trail.
“It’s totally premature,” he said. “We have to confirm they are human remains that are out there, not that we doubt the credibility of the two young men who found them.”
The sheriff’s major crimes unit is leading the investigation of the remains.
