EVERETT – I-5 will be closed at milepost 192 for four nights starting Jan. 9, detouring nighttime commuters around the Broadway and 41st Street SE intersection, state officials said Tuesday.
The closures are necessary so the state Department of Transportation can bolt into place 15 girders that will support a new overhead offramp for the northbound lanes.
When the new ramp opens in June, northbound I-5 traffic will use it to exit onto Broadway from the right-hand lane.
Detours
Heres how you can detour around the I-5 closures. NORTHBOUND CLOSURE Nights of Monday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 10 1. Take the left-lane Broadway exit near milepost 192. 2. Stay in right lane, take the S. Third Avenue, Lowell, I-5 north loop ramp. 3. Turn left at stop sign, then left onto 41st Street SE. The northbound I-5 onramp will be on your right. SOUTHBOUND CLOSURE Nights of Wednesday, Jan. 11, and Thursday, Jan. 12 1. Exit at 41st Street SE. 2. Get in right lane and take free right-hand turn onto 41st Street SE. 3. Stay in right lane and take southbound I-5 onramp, which is on the right. 4. At the stop sign, turn right onto Broadway. Immediately merge left and continue onto southbound I-5. |
The ramp is part of the state’s $220 million I-5 widening project that’s now under way in north Everett.
All northbound lanes will be closed the nights of Jan. 9 and 10. All southbound I-5 lanes will be closed on the nights of Jan. 11 and 12. The closures will go from 10:30 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next morning.
“Setting these bridge girders in January is a huge milestone for having the new Broadway exit open in June of next year,” said Victoria Tobin, a state transportation department spokeswoman.
Four cranes will be used to set the 86-ton, 106-foot-long girders in place. Each girder will be set into place with 480 bolts, each weighing 1 1/2 pounds.
When the new right-hand exit opens in June, the far-left lane and its exit will close for about a year, reopening as a carpool-only lane that will extend from the Boeing Freeway to U.S. 2. A carpool lane also will be added to the southbound lanes.
Reader boards will be placed on the freeway to warn people of the closures and provide information on detours.
