The state opened one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes of I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass at about 11 a.m. today, state Department of Transportation officials said. The hope is to open a second eastbound lane shortly.
The mountain pass had been closed for avalanche control since 7:25 a.m. Tuesday. Traffic had been detoured to U.S. 2 and other east-west routes during the closure.
If you plan to take I-90, be prepared for snow, and lots of it. Weather forecasters predict a lull in snowfall through early afternoon today, but there’s plenty still on the ground. There also is another two feet of snow forecast to fall in the next 24 hours. That means more closures could be needed for more avalanche control work.
Chains are required for all vehicles except those with all wheel drive. Traction tires are required for all vehicles without chains. State officials recommend drivers check the conditions of the pass before heading out. The state posts the latest updates at www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes. Many news outlets are posting updates as well.
