YAKIMA — It’s a smelly and messy mystery for workers at a Yakima sewage treatment center.
For years, someone or a business has been using Yakima’s sewer system to get rid of an unusual type of heavy-duty paper towel, which clogs the city’s water treatment system, forcing workers to hand-rake the filtering machine.
Staffers at the Regional Wastewater Plant have tried, but failed for years to figure out who sends the thousands of paper towels, which they deemed to be the most annoying item they encounter as they treat 13 million gallons of sewage a day.
Most people don’t routinely flush down paper towel because they can cause nasty clogs. The heavy-duty paper towels arrive in such high numbers that they overwhelm the filtering machinery.
