ARLINGTON — Those who walk the airport trail around Arlington Municipal Airport can look forward to adding a little history to their jaunts.
The airport plans to install nine 2-by-3-foot signs around the trail. The colorful additions will detail the history of the airfield at various locations around the site.
Over the years, the airport office has compiled an extensive collection of historical and aerial photographs, drawings, articles, blueprints and other documents that trace its beginnings as a military airfield, airport supervisor Dale Carman said.
Neill Mullen’s book “Arlington Municipal Airport: 1934 to 1946,” materials from the Stillaguamish Valley Pioneer Museum, the National Archives office in Seattle and private historians, as well as clippings from the Arlington Times, were all used to make the signs, he said.
“It’s a cool project,” Carman said. “Arlington is really into its history and is very proud of that military role.”
The airport’s History Sign Project was part of the city’s airport improvement budget this year and should come in under budget to cost about $6,000 to print and mount the signs, Carman said.
Fossil Industries of New York, a company that has provided signs for the city in the past, is doing the work, he said.
