JUNEAU, Alaska — The Juneau Assembly is considering a proposed tax on the use of some plastic shopping bags.
City manager Rod Swope said proponents collected enough signatures to put an initiative on the October ballot calling for a 15 cent tax or fee on each plastic bag provided by certain retailers at the point-of-sale.
KINY said the tax would apply to certain local retailers that have annual gross sales of $15 million or more, such as Safeway, Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart and Home Depot.
Swope said the assembly retains the option of adopting something similar and negating such an initiative.
Dixie Belcher, a sponsor of the initiative, said the goal is to get people to use their own reusable bags.
Assembly members will examine the issue when they meet Monday.
