EVERETT — Jury selection is expected to continue today in the murder trial of an Everett police officer accused of killing a drunken man outside a bar last year.
Lawyers began questioning potential jurors late Tuesday but still had work ahead when court recessed for the day.
Attorneys were expected to give opening arguments today in the case against Troy Meade, an 11-year veteran.
Witnesses told investigators that Niles Meservey, 51, was intoxicated and uncooperative when Meade found him sitting behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Corvette on June 10, 2009, outside the Chuckwagon Inn.
Meservey refused to get out of his car even after Meade shocked him twice with an electric stun gun. After Meservey drove into a chain link fence, Meade threw down his Taser, grabbed his service handgun and fired multiple times into the back of the Corvette, according to investigators.
Meservey was struck by seven bullets.
Meade, 41, refused to give investigators a statement after the shooting. His attorney David Allen is expected to argue that his client feared for his life and shot Meservey in self-defense.
The trial is expected to last through next week.
