Kids to work on Garfield Park mural with artist

EVERETT – Everett artist Shannon Danks will help children create a tile and marble mural from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Garfield Park, on 24th Street between Walnut and State streets.

Danks said all children are welcome and should bring gloves to handle the tiles and something to drink.

Weather permitting, she and the children will try to finish the mural Saturday, but if necessary will work on it again Sunday starting at 10 a.m.

When it’s finished, the “Everyone is welcome at Garfield Park” mural, 3 feet tall and almost 7 feet across, will hang on the wall of the restroom building at the park.

The mural is part of the Riverside Neighborhood Association’s yearlong park beautification project, made possible by a $6,900 city grant.

Police ticket drivers for crosswalk violations

Police ticketed 20 drivers Friday in he department’s first pedestrian safety patrol of the summer.

Plainclothes officers were on the lookout for drivers who failed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks in the 200 block of E. Casino Road, Everett Sgt. Dan Templeman said.

Violators face a $101 fine. The stings are funded by a Washington Traffic Safety Commission grant.

Officers will be out throughout the summer looking for jaywalkers, and for drivers who don’t stop for pedestrians, who block intersections and who run red lights.

Two men hiding from police kidnap woman

Two men who were trying to hide from Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies allegedly ran into a woman’s Everett apartment, then made her drive them to a nearby hotel.

The woman told detectives that the two entered her apartment June 9 when her 4-year-old son answered the door, Everett District Court papers say.

One of the men stole some clothing, she told investigators. The men indicated that deputies were searching for them.

After driving them to the Airport Inn, the woman called 911 to report the break-in, court documents say. Neither she nor her son were hurt.

One of the men, Kenny R. Easley, 20, was arrested by sheriff’s deputies Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, second-degree robbery and unlawful imprisonment. He’s being held on $25,000 bail.

Sheriff’s deputies are still searching for the second man.

Suspect investigated for previous robberies

A suspected bank robber who was arrested last week after a waitress tipped off police is under investigation for three other bank robberies.

Michael C. Warner, 53, of Oregon was arrested June 15 in connection with a robbery at the First Security Bank branch at 11102 Evergreen Way.

Waitress Terry Fleischbein, who was working at the diner where Warner was having breakfast, contacted police when she noticed he fit the description of the bank robber and didn’t seem alarmed about the nearby robbery.

He allegedly had money from the bank in his pockets.

Warner is a suspect in robberies Jan. 8 at a Lake Stevens bank, Feb. 15 at an Everett bank and April 28 at an Everett bank, according to a search warrant filed in Snohomish County District Court. Warner allegedly matches the description of the man who robbed all three banks, police said.
