SEATTLE — The devastating fire at an Anacortes refinery earlier this month claimed its last victim early Saturday.
Matt Gumbel, 34, of Oak Harbor, lost the fight for his life shortly before 3 a.m. following a surgery at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, family members wrote on a Web site set up to keep friends and relatives updated.
“Matt was a wonderful person, son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, friend and co-worker. We will all truly miss him and never forget him,” his loved ones wrote.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a blast at the Tesoro Corp. refinery on April 2 that killed Gumbel and six other workers. They were Daniel J. Aldridge, 50, of Anacortes; Kathryn Powell, 29, of Burlington; Matthew C. Bowen, 31, of Arlington; Darrin J. Hoines, 43, of Ferndale; Donna Van Dreumel, 36, of Oak Harbor; and Lew Janz, 41.
A public memorial for all the victims is planned for 2 p.m. today in Brodniak Hall at Anacortes High School, 1600 20th St., Anacortes.
