Suicide threat forces schools into lockdown
LAKE STEVENS – Lake Stevens High School and Highland Elementary School were locked down for about an hour Thursday morning while police investigated a report of a suicidal man inside a nearby house.
A woman called police about 8 a.m. and reported that the man had a gun. Officers surrounded the house, located in the 11500 block of 26th Street NE, and had the schools locked down as a precaution. Police were unable to reach the man by phone. Eventually he walked outside and was detained by officers.
He was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center for an evaluation. No gun was found inside the house.
School officials called off the lockdown about 9:30 a.m.
Edmonds: Arrest in girl’s New Year’s death
Police on Thursday arrested a man in connection with the death of a Puyallup girl who died at a New Year’s Eve party after overdosing on Ecstasy.
Danielle Dawn McCarthy, 16, was found unconscious at a party in the 9400 block of 220th Street SW in Edmonds, police said. Friends brought the girl to Stevens Hospital early New Year’s Day, where doctors determined she died.
Police believe they have found the person responsible for providing the girl with the illegal drug, Edmonds police Sgt. Don Anderson said.
Edmonds detectives arrested a 19-year-old Puyallup man and booked him into the King County Jail for investigation of homicide by controlled substance. Detectives believe the man gave the girl the drugs while they were driving to the party in Edmonds. Because he allegedly provided the drugs in King County, the case and potential criminal prosecution are now being handled by that jurisdiction, police said.

Seattle: Stodden family will help clean up park
The family of Mary Cooper and Susanna Stodden, the mother and daughter killed on Snohomish County’s Pinnacle Lake trail on July 11, are continuing their efforts to help clean up city parks in the women’s memory.
David Stodden is planning to join a work party Saturday to plant trees in Seattle’s Lakeridge Park.
His daughter, Susanna Stodden, worked and volunteered in the park for several years taking water-quality samples with high school students and planting native trees, the family said in a statement.
The public is invited to join the Stodden family at Lakeridge Park from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Rainier Avenue S. and S. 68th Street, Seattle.
The family recommends volunteers dress for the weather and wear long pants. People should bring work gloves if possible. Tools will be available, but people are encouraged to bring their own if possible.
