Local briefly: Electrical trouble considered likely garage fire cause

ARLINGTON — A fire that gutted a garage Monday morning likely was started by faulty electrical equipment used for a small marijuana grow operation inside the building, fire officials said.

A man reported smoke pouring from his neighbor’s 20-foot by 30-foot backyard shop about 3:30 a.m. He raced to wake up his neighbor and alert him to the blaze.

There were no fire hydrants near the garage, located in the 10800 block of 124th Street NE, Getchell Fire Chief Travis Hots said. Fire crews hauled in water using tinder trucks. The fire was extinguished in about 40 minutes.

No one was hurt.

An investigator with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was accidental and likely was caused by an electrical problem. Investigators discovered the person living there appeared to be growing marijuana inside the shop, Hots said. The fire destroyed all 30 of the plants growing inside.

The Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force is investigating the grow operation.

Fire crews from Arlington Heights, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens and Marysville also assisted to extinguish the blaze.

Everett: Rollover crash sends two to hospital

A one-car rollover crash sent two people to the hospital on Monday.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. in the 500 block of 128th Street SW. Fire crews arrived to find a four-door Chevrolet Malibu on its top in the middle of the road.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 60s were pulled from the car and taken to Providence Everett Medical Center with injuries that appeared not to be life threatening, said Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.

The crash was reported as a hit-and-run. Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies are investigating.

Lynnwood: Robbery suspect arrested

A suspected bank robber picked the wrong place to park his getaway car Saturday.

Lynnwood police arrested a 38-year-old man Sunday morning, less than 24 hours after he allegedly held up a Bank of America on Highway 99.

Detectives were able to track the man down after reviewing surveillance tape from a nearby business, which captured the license plate number of the man’s getaway car, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said.

The man walked into the bank about 1 p.m. and passed a note to a teller demanding money. He took the cash and drove off, unaware that his parking space is watched by a security camera.

Employees at the business were watching the surveillance live and called 911 to report a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. They provided the license plate number to police.

Investigators used the information to track the man to Camano Island, where he was staying.

He was arrested and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree robbery.

Oso: Truck rolls, spills sawdust into yard

A semi-truck rolled off Highway 530 and dumped a load of sawdust into an Oso yard around 7 p.m. Monday.

No one was injured.

The westbound lane of Highway 530 near Oso Loop Road, about 13 miles northeast of Arlington, was closed for several hours while crews cleaned up the sawdust and attempted to move the truck, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Kirk Rudeen.

The truck belonged to Puget Sound Trucking and was being driven by a 47-year-old Everett man.

Rudeen said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash. The cause of the accident was still under investigation Monday night.
