Love story Amber Shearer and Lucas Murray

Amber Shearer fell in love with Lucas Murray when they were students at Mariner High School in Everett.

They were 15 years old, and she followed him around from class to class pretending to be waiting for a friend.

They dated but not seriously; he’d take her around on his bike. But soon, Luke moved to Oregon.

Once there, he and Amber kept in touch. She saw him when he came to Washington to visit his family. The last summer he visited, Amber felt like Luke was hurting her feelings by returning to Oregon and stood him up.

They hadn’t talked to each other for about a year, when one day while driving in Everett, Amber got a surprise.

“I heard someone in the car next to me calling out my name,” Amber said.

At first she ignored the voice. But when he rolled down his window, Amber saw it was Luke.

“I was so happy,” Amber said.

Amber Shearer and Lucas Murray of Edmonds plan an Aug. 12 wedding in Index.

Their parents are Jerry and Leslie Shearer, and Dotty Maier and Kenny Murray.

Amber is an administrative assistant for Farmers Insurance in Mill Creek. She’s also a full- time student at Edmonds Community College. Luke is an apartment building engineer in Mukilteo.

Luke had already moved back from Oregon before their chance meeting. They spent every day of the next year together.

“I think that’s when we really fell in love,” Amber said.

Amber and Luke have a son, Austin, who was born in February 2001.

But it was during a weekend at Ocean Shores in April that Luke proposed to Amber. They rented a moped, and with Amber on the back, Luke headed for the beach. He got off the bike, got down on one knee and popped the question.

They had talked about marriage often, but this was a surprise to Amber.

“He is a great dad and a wonderful fiance,” Amber said. “He makes me want to be the best person I want to be.”

The couple is looking forward to their wedding, where friends and family will gather to watch Amber’s grandmother, Patty, an ordained minister, marry the pair. They will honeymoon in Hawaii.

Amber said her relationship with Luke is an adventure.

“He makes me feel good,” she said. “I always told myself I’d marry him, but I never thought it would come true.”
