EVERETT — Everett Police Department arrested a man on Aug. 27, suspected of setting off homemade explosive devices in June.
Around 9:30 p.m. June 24, patrol officers were answering a different call when they heard a loud explosion near 35th Street and Broadway in Everett, court documents said.
When they arrived, officers encountered multiple witnesses who reported a male setting off homemade explosives over the last hour. According to witness reports, the last explosion produced multiple pieces of shrapnel and nearly struck a witness. Video footage obtained from the witness appeared to corroborate their account.
“It’s so loud that my PTSD is kicking in,” one witness said to police, according to court documents.
Officers found numerous detonation sites while canvassing the area, according to an Everett Police Department social media post. Washington State Interagency Bomb Squad assisted in processing this scene.
Officers located a black-tube shaped item wrapped in duct tape around the size of a soda bottle near 35th Street and Broadway, court documents said. Pieces of duct tape were scattered around the area in addition to shrapnel littered between Broadway and Lombard Avenue and lodged into nearby trees and houses.
Around 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27, officers from the anti-crime team and violent crime unit located the suspect leaving his Lynnwood apartment on a motorcycle. The suspect attempted to elude police when they initiated a traffic stop, but he was later taken into custody when he returned to his apartment, court documents said.
The suspect was booked on suspicion of attempting to elude, possession of an explosive device and using and possessing explosives without a license, the post said. Officers discovered commercial fireworks and improvised homemade explosive devices at his residence.
