LYNNWOOD — Three Lynnwood police officers were injured in an explosion Saturday.
Around 9 a.m., an officer responded to a business on 60th Avenue West to get what police believed was drug paraphernalia and abandoned clothing, according to a Lynnwood police press release. The office returned to the police station to catalog the property. As the officer weighed a substance, a small ball of unknown powder exploded on the table.
The explosion was loud and caused a concussive blast. Dust filled the room, leading to an evacuation of the building as officers worried of exposure to dangerous chemicals, according to police. Fire officials determined the scene was not contaminated.
Two officers in the room and a sergeant next door suffered minor injuries. One had a small piece of shrapnel in his cheek, which was removed. All have since returned to normal duties.
Police suspect the “explosive substance was a homemade concoction of volatile chemicals,” the press release reads. There was no indication the store or the police department were targeted.
On Monday, police continued to investigate to figure out who last possessed the abandoned items.
