Man dead, deputy injured in Whatcom shootout
BELLINGHAM — A man is dead and a sheriff’s deputy injured after a five-hour standoff ended in a shootout in Whatcom County.
Sheriff Bill Elfo told KGMI deputies responded Sunday afternoon to neighbors who feared for their safety because a man was firing a gun in his back yard in the community of Kendall.
Elfo says the man was a convicted felon wanted on multiple arrest warrants.
The sheriff says the man fired a shot at deputies and then ran into a building on his property where he fired more shots when they tried to enter. They returned fire. The man’s body was found with a rifle by his side.
One deputy injured by bullet fragments was treated at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.
Bellingham police are investigating the shootout.
