SNOHOMISH — Mayor Linda Redmon has appointed Lt. Mike Martin as the next police chief for Snohomish, replacing Chief Rob Palmer, who plans to retire in June.
“Lt. Martin brings to Snohomish an impressive and meaningful amount of experience, a deep desire to serve, and a strong sense of the Snohomish community,” Redmon said in a prepared statement.
If Martin is approved by the Snohomish City Council, he will take over on July 1 after he is sworn in by Snohomish County Sheriff Adam Fortney on June 20. The city has contracted with Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office for police services since 2012.
Palmer, who was appointed as police chief in September 2020, will step down after 35 years in law enforcement.
“I was extremely proud of how the applicants for Snohomish Police Chief performed during the selection process,” Palmer said in a written statement. “I’m very pleased with the selection of Mike as our next Chief of Police.”
Martin has worked in law enforcement for over 25 years. He began his career as a deputy for Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office in 1998, according to his LinkedIn page. Martin served as SWAT team commander for 19 years, police chief in Sultan from 2018 to 2022, and most recently as unit commander for Snohomish Transit police.
The City Council is scheduled to consider Martin’s nomination at its meeting May 2.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly said Snohomish County Sheriff Adam Fortney selected Lt. Mike Martin as police chief. Fortney has no role in the selection process.
