MARYSVILLE — Marysville’s mayor has been picked to lead a political action organization focused on electing moderate Republicans in the state.
Jon Nehring will be the next chairman of the Mainstream Republicans of Washington. Outgoing chair Mike Vaska, a Seattle attorney, is running for Washington attorney general against incumbent Bob Ferguson.
A statement from the organization highlights Nehring’s “pragmatic leadership and policy” and “creative solutions to homelessness.” Nehring helped start a program in which social workers team up with Marysville police to work with those who are homeless.
The Mainstream Republicans of Washington models itself after a more centrist approach, referencing former Gov. Dan Evans and former Sen. Slade Gorton. On its website, the group says it’s raised more than $1 million in contributions since 2000 for Republican candidates in the state.
“I am honored to become MRW’s new Chairman, and I want to thank Mike Vaska for the three years he spent building this organization,” Nehring said in a statement. “MRW will continue to play a vital role in building a Big-Tent Republican Party that welcomes diverse views and strives for workable cost-effective policy solutions.”
Nehring, 49, started in Marysville politics on the city council in 2001. He was appointed mayor in 2010 and has since won re-election twice and run unopposed once.
