MARYSVILLE — The city is planning for the start of its federal Community Development Block Grant funding program.
The program, run by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides grant money to cities and counties to help provide housing, a suitable living environment and economic opportunities principally for people with low- and moderate-incomes.
The city became eligible to receive the federal funds under the program when its population reached 50,000 through an annexation in December 2009, city spokesman Doug Buell said. City officials expect to receive $218,016 in federal funds under the program for this year.
A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday to allow residents to provide input about community development needs so the city can form an annual action plan and a five-year strategic plan. The meeting is at Marysville City Hall council chambers, 1049 State Ave.
The city expects to submit the plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in mid-May and release applications for the grant money in July, Buell said.
People who cannot attend the public meeting but would like to submit written comments must send them by 4 p.m. Tuesday to be included in a draft consolidated plan.
Mail comments to senior planner Chris Holland, 80 Columbia Avenue, Marysville, WA 98270 or email cholland@marysvillewa.gov.
Public comments will be accepted throughout the city’s planning process, Holland added.
“We’re really trying to identify what the needs are in the Marysville community for administering this program,” he said.
