Leading her class: Is senior class president at Everett High and was junior class president a year ago. Says it takes a lot of organizing. “We’re planning senior ball right now. It’s at Qwest Field. It was hard to book.” Wants it to be special because “senior ball is the last shebang for the seniors.”
Head in clouds: Recently earned her pilot’s license, fulfilling a childhood dream. Flies a Cessna 172 out of Paine Field. Earning license took a lot of commitment, squeezing out time for aviation classes and studying between a rigorous class load at school, sports and school leadership. Says it was all worth it to fly. “I just feel so free. It’s amazing.”
Aviation career?: Looking to major in aerospace engineering and has applied to University of Washington, MIT, Georgia Tech and University of California at San Diego. Wants to design high performing aircraft and possibly work for NASA. Is about a half-inch short of height requirement to become an astronaut and says with a laugh, “I’ll just have to stretch every morning.”
On right track: Was on school’s swim and track team. Competes in pole vault “because I can fly.”
No senior slacking: Taking calculus, physics, college-level English among other courses. Lots of deadlines as co-editor of the yearbook.
Creative side: Likes math and science, particularly chemistry and physics, but also enjoys writing music and poetry.
Fond memories: Loved visits to a relative’s property in Enumclaw as a child, playing in fields and feeding horses and cows. “It was a big piece of property with ponds, and we would always go out and catch big bullfrogs during the day and sit around the campfire at night with the whole family.”
More memories: “The family would always have big barbecues and would always sing karaoke.” She and her cousin “would sing our hearts out ‘til we were blue in the face, rocking out to country music or old classics. I felt like such as superstar when I had the microphone in my hand.”
Looking back: Enjoyed swimming with dolphins in Florida as a fourth-grader and hanging out in her neighborhood on a hill west of Marysville. Spent time making goofy videos with neighbors as kids. There were talk shows, dancing and lip synching. “It was always fun.”
Feels fortunate: Says she has had many good teachers who inspired her a lot over the years, first at Immaculate Conception in Everett and then Everett High. Savors the lifetime friendships made at Immaculate, but doesn’t miss the uniforms.
Work in progress: Has gone snowboarding a few times and likes the challenge of learning something new. “The first time I tried snowboarding I just kept falling down the mountain.”
Helping out: Served on Everett mayor’s youth council and as a mentor at school, among other activities.
